(doi: 10.1023/B:WIBI.0000023832.27679.a8)

1.81 Thai medicinal plants!
2.4 geographical regions of Thailand
3.isolate endophytes and investigating biological activity
4.582 pure isolates, 360 distinct fungi morphologic culture 1. malt Czapek broth 2. yeast extract sucrose broth
5.Biological activities include;
Antimicrobial/viral - M. tuberculosis, P. falciparum, Herpes simplex virus type1
Anticancer activity - human oral epidermoid carcinoma, breast cancer cells
6.Type of media affects the bioactivity profile
7.obstacle of this study -- fungi could not produce spore --> could not identify.

Sample collection;
Ubonratchathani,
Nakornratchasima,
Chiangmai,
Songkla

Crude extract after dry --> 80 mg/ml - 1 g/ml in DMSO depending on solubility.
Tuberculosis test
Final concentration --> 800 ug/ml (making the serial 2 fold dilution) in 100 ul RXN.

P. falciparum
Crude extract 20 mg/ml in DMSO
dilute 100 fold --> 200 ug/ml in media

Anti-viral
Final crude extract -- 50 ug/ml

Anticancer;
Final conc. crude extract -- 20 ug/ml
Treat with extract for 72 hrs.

The samples which showed the positive result will be further characterized for IC50 in each test.
It is well known that culture medium can affect the presence or absence of secondary metabolites and/or their level of production by fungi.
MCz and YES broths have previously been recommended as media for production of secondary metabolites by fungi and our results confirm that they are suitable for screening large numbers of isolates.

Author suggested more selective media or optimized custom media might give better expression for some phenotypes.

Thus, Thai medicinal plants should be another potential source of bioactive endophytic fungi.
