Neuroplasticity - what the brain can be changed and reconnected to the things surrounding.

I really love this video, I have been interested in neuroplasticity for a while ago, I have been interested this term "neuroplasticity" while I was attending the SCPA501 course at the Department of Pathology. In the course, one of the group was assigned to present the Psychoneuroimmunology which is part of the immunological disorder. While I was searching for the Psychoneuroimmunology, neuroplasticity had come across.

Dr. Lara Boyd from the University of British Columbia has given a wonderful TedTalk on the brain research. There are three key factors she mentioned in the talk that affect the neuroplasticity and of course the learning ability.

1. Chemical -- brain cells communicate each other by sending the signal to what we call as "neurotransmitter". It happens very rapidly and it facilitates the short-term memory and motor skill (the ability to control the muscle).

2. Structural changes -- how brain cells rearrange as the network, to support the communication between each brain cell, also affect the person's learning ability. This type of change can promote "long-term" memory and life-long motor skill.

3. Functional alteration -- using it! the more the brain cells are used the easier it becomes excitable.

What I like in this talk is that - she stated on the personalized medicine that basically this concept is initiated from cancer treatment. Obviously, one drug could not be fit for all, the same concept has applied to the one learning type could not fit to all the kids as well as one type of therapy could not be applied to all the patients who have been recovering from the stroke. Her research focuses on the certain characteristics of brain structure and function, that her team called "biomarker", influence the stroke rehabilitation.

Lastly, she left the message to the audiences which were quite impressive.

"You and your plastic brain are constantly being shaped by the world around you. Understand that everything you do, everything you encounter, and everything you experience is changing your brain. And that can be for better, but it can also be for worse. So when you leave today go out and build the brain you want."

The brain (of course - the mind) is changed by the people and environmental surroundings. It could be great and could be worst. It is your choice to make your own path!
