Happiness is all in your mind: Gen Kelsang Nyema at TEDxGreenville 2014



I really like this video, below is the short reminded note for myself and happy to share with others.

I want to start off with a few questions:

1. Are you having a good day/bad day?

2. Why you are having a good day/bad day?

3. Tmr, would you rather have a good day or bad day? or the day after tomorrow? or other days?

When we have a good day, it will make us happy. Of course, we want to be happy everyday. Whether or not, we have a good day or bad day, it really depends upon how we answer the second question. Why am I having a good/bad day?

Geshe Kelsang Gyatso (Zen teacher) said that much of the time, our mind is just like a balloon in the wind, blown here and there by external circumstances. Do you know that feeling? If things go with our ways - then we feel happy, if not, like we are forced to work with someone who we dislike, the happiness will be blown away.

As long as our reasons for why we are having a good day are listed as external condition, then we are not going to have the stable happiness as we all want. Does this make sense to you? Bc we cannot control the ppl or circumstances every single day, then our happiness be in hand of other owners, it will be the wind of circumstances. If really wish to have a good day every day;

1. stop out sourcing happiness/unhappiness on ppl or circumstances, need to stop attributing our happiness to what is going on externally and need to stop blaming other for unhappiness.

2. actively cultivate a source of peace or happiness coming from inside our own mind.

Happiness and unhappiness are state of mind, therefore, their real causes cannot be found outside the mind. So we have a peaceful state of mind, we will be happy, regardless of ppl and circumstances. If our mind is unpeaceful and agitated, if we are in the good circumstances, it will be hard to find the happiness.

It is not what is happening make us happy or unhappy, it is how we are responses to those things that making us happy or unhappy. It is the state of mind that determines our happiness or unhappiness.


How we are going to do it? How do we cultivate the inner peace? Meditation is the mental action of concentrate to the peaceful positive state of mind.
